Almost 3.1 million non-fatal workplace injuries and illnesses were reported among private industry employers in the United States last year as reported by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those statistics clearly show that American workplaces can still be dangerous places to spend eight hours every day. Of course, it can be an even more dangerous place to spend 20 plus hours a day as many jobs require.
Workplace injuries cover a wide range of personal injuries from not so major to life altering or life ending. Many companies do not carry worker compensation insurance and for those that do it is often insufficient to make the injured worked and his or her family whole. If there is no comp, then the employer will have to be sued directly and will most likely have no insurance to cover the claim, which requires an experienced attorney to navigate these cases. Even if there is workers comp, when the injuries are caused by someone other than the employer or are caused by defective equipment, then additional claims can be made and should be pursued to fully protect all of the injured person’s rights.
