Halloween Safety Guide

Halloween is always a fun, exciting time for kids and parents alike. However, with this Halloween fun comes safety concerns and necessary precautions to remain safe and to ensure a good time.

Halloween safety guide

Check out my Halloween safety guide to ensure a fun, safe Halloween!

In the United States, October ranks number 1 for motor vehicle deaths by month. While this is partially due to lack of visibility from low lighting or dark clothing, it’s because pedestrians are improperly crossing streets or drivers are not watching for pedestrians. Find out what you and your family can do to remain safe this Halloween.

Driving

• Drive slower than usual on Halloween, especially in residential neighborhoods.
• Eliminate any distractions inside your car.
• Enter and exit driveways and alleys with caution.
• When turning, use extra caution and look for anyone about to cross the street.

Costumes

• Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers.
• If possible, choose brightly colored costumes.
• Since facemasks can obstruct vision, consider using face paint instead. When using face paint, be sure that it is nontoxic and test it in a small area first.
• Carry glow sticks or flashlights to not only help with seeing, but to also be seen.

Walking

• Watch for cars that are turning corners or backing up.
• Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas.
• Avoid trick-or-treating alone.
• Walk, don’t run, across streets or along sidewalks.
• Always stay on the sidewalk and stop and obey traffic signals.
• Put electronic devices down when crossing the street.
• Learn to make eye contact with a driver before crossing in front of them. (This is a good practice for every day life, not just Halloween.)

Treats

• Tell children to wait until they get home to eat their treats. An adult should always examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.
